An ambitious project to create the first West African regional university in Liberia has been adopted by the board of directors of the foundation. Unlike most of the region’s universities, the University of West Africa will provide Western standard of education that will produce graduates to fill the deficit in human capital which is urgently needed to provide professional services and to lift the region out of poverty.
The university will be a boost to education in Liberia and to the surrounding countries. Years of civil war and severe poverty have kept a generation of youth with limited or no education. Universities in the region are often overcrowded and underfunded. Less than 5% of students graduating from secondary schools are enrolled in any post secondary educational institution.
The African Education Foundation is building partnership with U.S. and Canadian universities to accomplish this mammoth project. Universities with strong programs in agriculture, education and healthcare are being consulted.
The operating cost of the university is to be funded locally through business sponsorship, non-profit corporations, and tuition; but the capital funding for the project is being contributed by the African Education Foundation in North America.
